Africa Fashion Week London 2011 Recap

Held at the stunning Gibson Hall in central London the event showcased collections from emerging designers and entrepreneurs from Nigeria, Cape Verde, Zimbabwe, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Kenya, Uganda, UK and more. I attended the second and first shows respectively over the two day event. Ankara fabrics dominated the cat walk with a focus on mixture of fabrics and embroidery on one end  and, collections showing a strong preference for  silky fabrics, leather and even burlap on the  other.

Being a first  AFWL there were a few hiccups but there was overwhelming support for the event from the general public and press. The atmosphere  was positive and celebratory with encouraging commentary coming from the audience during the runway shows ( Can you seriously expect an  African meme not to shout with joy when her child is presented to an audience??).

Zekaryas Solomon (Eritrea/Germany) men’s collection which showcases structure, versatility and and edge.
